Is the coronavirus the beginning of the end for handshaking?
Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a foremost figure in the fight against coronavirus, suggested just that in the Wall Street Journal’s podcast.
“When you gradually come back, you don’t jump into it with both feet,” Fauci said on the podcast The Journal. “You say, what are the things you could still do and still approach normal? One of them is absolute compulsive hand washing. The other is you don’t ever shake anybody’s hands.”
“I don't think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you. Not only would it be good to prevent coronavirus disease; it probably would decrease instances of influenza dramatically in this country,” Fauci said.
Fauci brought it up again during the White House’s coronavirus task force briefing Wednesday, saying “it sounds crazy but that’s the way it’s really got to be.”
On the podcast, Fauci also said the end of April could bring a “light at the end of the tunnel” but that any return to normal life will take time.
“It isn’t like a light switch—on and off—it’s a gradual pulling back on certain restrictions and getting society a bit back to normal,” he said. “Botton line: it’s going to be gradual.”
