Variety has a new report on the state of DC Films, in the wake of success that the studio has experienced lately, thanks to 2018’s Aquaman and this year’s Shazam! and Joker.

The report notes that, while a new Batman has recently been cast  — Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson — the studio does not yet have a new direction for Superman. The article mentions that there have been discussions with director J.J. Abrams, who has breathed new life into a number of other franchises, notably Mission: Impossible, Star Trek and Star Wars.

They also mention that Michael B. Jordan had a meeting with the studio, where the Creed star pitched parent company Warner Brothers on a vision for the character. Jordan famously played Erik “Killmonger” Stevens in 2018’s Black Panther. But before that, he played another Marvel character:  Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch in 2015’s Fantastic Four – a canonically white character in the comic books.

However, Variety reports that Jordan isn’t ready to commit to taking on the role, as filming probably won’t start for years. Variety notes that “insiders think that a new Superman film is unlikely to hit screens before 2023, given that there’s no script and no director attached.”
