An Alabama couple was shocked when police officers rang their doorbell at 6:30 in the morning. When the Lamey's answered the door, a police officer explained that they had picked up 'this nice kid' who said he was on his way to their house to assist them with their move. According to AL.com, the "nice kid" was Walter Carr, who was starting his first day at Bellhops moving company.
The cops found Carr walking along the highway early in the morning and stopped to check on his well-being. Carr explained that his car had broken down the night before and he did not want to be late or miss his first day at Bellhops moving company, so he decided to walk over 20 miles to his new job.
The officers were so impressed with the young man's work ethic and dedication that they offered to give him a ride to get some breakfast. After breakfast, they officers dropped him off at a church where he waited until sunrise to continue his journey to the Lamey's house. As he was walking, another officer picked him up and drove him to the Lamey's house.
When Carr arrived, the Lamey's were extremely impressed with his attitude. They offered to let him take a nap until his co-workers arrived, but instead he decided to get right to work and helping Jenny and Chris pack up their belongings.
When Bellhops' CEO Luke Marklin heard about Carr's dedication he drove personally from Tennessee to Birmingham to meet him. He also had a surprise for the young man, a 2014 Ford Escape.
"I am honestly blown away by him,'' Marklin said of Carr. "Everything he did that day is exactly who we are - heart and grit. So far, he's batting a thousand."
Jenny Lamey shared the touching story in a viral Facebook post.
I just can’t tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is humble and kind and cheerful and he had big dreams! He is hardworking and tough. I can’t imagine how many times on that lonely walk down 280 in the middle of the night did he want to turn back. How many times did he wonder if this was the best idea. How many times did he want to find a place to sit or lie down and wait til morning when he could maybe get someone to come pick him up and bring him back home. But he walked until he got here! I am in total awe of this young man!
