#Phillies Papelbon: 'I definitely didn't come here for this'

Following the Phillies' eighth straight loss to finish a brutal 1-8 road trip (see story), Jonathan Papelbon made some eyebrow-raising comments regarding the team’s current state.

“I definitely didn't come here for this," the Phillies’ closer told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki.

So what does Papelbon think it's going to take to turn the team around and to get back into contention?

“Oh, man," he said. “We could be here all day.

“It's going to take, in my opinion, a lot. And in my opinion, I think it's going to have to be something very similar to what the Red Sox went through a couple years ago. From top to bottom.”

After a late-season collapse to miss the postseason in 2011, the Red Sox underwent drastic change on and off the field, remaking both the roster and the front office.

Papelbon was one of those who did not return, and he understood why.

“That's part of the business,” the 32-year-old said. “If you want to go in a different direction and I'm not a piece of that puzzle, so be it. This is a job. There are no feelings in this game. I left. Carl [Crawford] left. [Josh] Beckett left. Adrian [Gonzalez] left. Now look at them.”

When asked if he wants to be traded out of Philadelphia, he replied: “No, I would like to stay here. But if I'm going to have to put up with this year after year, then no, I don't want to be here. Why would you? Why would anybody?”
