Folks from Millville, NJ may refer to him as the “Millville Meteor,” but to his teammates and those in baseball circles, he’s just Mike Trout.
A member of the Los Angeles Angels, the 21-year-old outfielder grew up a Phillies fan and according to his dad, Jeff, a former fifth-round draft pick of the Twins, Mike is still is a Phillies fan.
Trout's father recalled a story from a few years back when in the middle of the night, Jeff heard Mike scream from his room.
“Dad, we got Roy Halladay!” Mike yelled. To which his dad responded: "the Angels got Halladay?”
“No, the Phillies did!” Mike replied. “Son, you’re a member of the Angels. What’s with thiswe?!”
I spent a couple of hours at the Trout home on Wednesday. Jeff is a high school history teacher and very much an influence in his son’s life.
Mike’s bedroom is filled with memorabilia, including the baseball uniforms he wore at age 8 and 9.
At the tender age of 21, most kids should be in college, but instead Trout’s name is being bandied about in AL MVP discussions. It makes sense -- the Millville Meteor is hitting .323 with 28 home runs, 78 RBI, 124 runs and 47 stolen bases.
